Odessa Brown Children’s clinic
When a Chicago hospital refused to treat young Odessa Brown during the Depression, that early indignity gave birth to an activist. Years later, at the height of the Civil Rights Era, Ms. Brown was raising her four children in Seattle when she became a community organizer. Through a federally-funded effort to solve inner city problems by building "model neighborhoods," she fought to bring quality health care with dignity to children in the Central Area. Odessa died of leukemia in 1969 at age 49. When the new children's clinic opened the next year, a thankful community named it in her honor.
Located in the heart of Seattle's Central Area, Odessa Brown Children's Clinic (OBCC) plays a vital role in promoting health to a pediatric population that is especially at-risk. Since 1970, the Clinic has operated as a community clinic of Seattle Children’s Hospital, providing a diverse range of services in medical care, dental care and mental health care.
